Access to Higher Education Resources 

Governor Hochul announced that all students graduating from HS have a guaranteed seat at a SUNY or CUNY community college.

Pursuing a college degree or post-secondary training allows you to:

  • Discover your talents and interests
  • Choose a career or trade and gain financial stability
  • Improve the quality of your life

There is financial support available:

Pell & TAP grants are available to help pay for college: the FAFSA forms are to be filled out your senior year or earlier.

IMPORTANT: If your family is on public assistance, MAKE SURE TO CHECK “YES” TO TWO QUESTIONS on FAFSA application: 

  • “Yes” I receive public assistance and “Yes” I want to participate in “Work Study”. 

There might be a waitlist for the work study program but do not be discouraged, there is a high chance you will still get in. It is better to check it off to be added on the waitlist if there is one.

Even if you are on public assistance you CAN go to college: (Pg. 18)

  • Getting a work study award will NOT lower the amount of your TA benefits or SNAP benefits
  • Childcare and transportation may be provided for approved work/school activities
  • Time spent at 2 year & 4 year institution, and other approved educational programs, in addition to internship, work study and supervised/unsupervised homework may be counted towards your mandatory TA work requirement
  • If your benefits are reduced or terminated, you can request a Fair Hearing

If you have questions: ASK for help. Ask somebody/anybody until you find your answer: school counselors, community leaders, church elders, family, family friends

La Gobernadora Hochul, del estado de Nueva York, anunció que todos los estudiantes que se gradúan de la escuela secundaria tienen un puesto garantizado en una universidad del estado de Nueva York (SUNY y CUNY).

Obtener un Título Universitario o una Capacitación Postsecundaria es posible y le permite:

  • Descubrir sus talentos e intereses
  • Elegir una carrera y obtener estabilidad financiera
  • Mejorar su calidad de vida

Existe Apoyo Financiero Disponible:

Los programas gubernamentales “Pell” y “TAP” están disponibles para ayudar a pagar la  universidad: Los formularios FAFSA deben completarse en su último año escolar (Senior year) o  antes.

IMPORTANTE: Si tu familia recibe asistencia pública, ASEGÚRESE DE MARCAR “SÍ” A DOS PREGUNTAS en la solicitud  FAFSA:

  • “Sí” recibo asistencia pública y “Sí” quiero participar en “Estudio y Trabajo”.

 Puede que haya una lista de espera para el programa de “Work Study”, pero no se desanime, hay una alta posibilidades de que aún ingrese. Es mejor marcarlo para agregarle a la lista de espera.

Aun recibiendo cualquier clase de asistencia pública, usted PUEDE ir a la universidad:  

  • Obtener una beca de estudio y trabajo NO reducirá el monto de sus beneficios de soporte gubernamental (welfare) o beneficios del programa SNAP
  • Si su familia recibe (welfare) las horas dedicadas a su estudio en una institución de 2 o 4 años,  programas educativos aprobados, tiempo dedicado a pasantías, las tareas supervisadas o no  supervisadas, pueden contarse hacia su requisito laboral obligatorio de soporte gubernamental (welfare).
  • Si sus beneficios de soporte gubernamental se reducen o cancelan, puede solicitar una audiencia imparcial para defender su caso

Pregúntele a su comunidad/maestros hasta que encuentre la respuesta: consejeros escolares, librerías, líderes comunitarios, lideres religiosos, familiares, amigos y demás.
